Over the last 1 years, Wee Books Childhood Literacy Program has put over 90,000 age appropriate books into the hands of Dawson County preschool children (ages 0-5 years) helping them to become learners for life. The books and an activity newsletter are mailed each month to the child’s home address.
There is solid scientific evidence that reading to this age group and encouraging them to practice language skills leads to better kindergarten readiness. Additionally, childhood literacy builds future students who meet or exceed grade level norms and are less likely to need remedial classes, be drop-outs or end up in a prison bed. This investment saves taxpayers millions of dollars! It is estimated that every $1 invested in early childhood literacy programs saves the taxpayer $17 in future remedial and correctional costs.
